In July of 2013 Channel Islands Outfitters became a 1% for the Planet partner thus promising to donate 1% of our gross sales to nonprofit organizations in the community.
Over the past 2 and a half years CIO has contributed more than $25,000 in cash donations plus another $10,000 in-kind service donations (kayak, SUP rentals and tours). We support organizations that “further the protection of the oceans and natural places through preservation, protection, and education.” These cash contributions have gone to:
“THE MERMAIDS ACT AS AMBASSADORS TO THE SEA BY EDUCATING OUR COMMUNITY ABOUT HUMAN-SOURCED OCEAN POLLUTION AND ADVOCATING FOR BEHAVIORS THAT BENEFIT THE OCEAN ENVIRONMENT.”
Why? Children hold the future of the oceans in their tiny hands. Choosing to be plastic free, using reusable water bottles and bags, saying no to plastic straws, and keeping our beaches and waterways clean, are all very important to healthy ocean environments. We love that Save the Mermaids is committed to working with children in educational endeavors that take place directly on the oceans, therefore creating the essential link between understanding them and protecting them.
“The mission of Wilderness Youth Project (WYP) is to foster confidence, health, and a life-long love of learning for young people and families through active outdoor experiences and mentoring.”
Why? Leading from behind is a principle that Wilderness Youth Project uses to allow children to learn on their own about natural places and their place in them. We love the philosophy and methods that WYP uses to foster a deep understanding of the natural world thus creating earth ambassadors for life.
“Santa Barbara Channelkeeper is a grassroots non-profit organization whose mission is to protect and restore the Santa Barbara Channel and its watersheds through science-based advocacy, education, field work and enforcement.”
Why? The oceans need a first line of defense to stand up for issues that affect them. Santa Barbara Channelkeeper is just that. From responding to oil spills, testing the waters behind cruise ships in the SB Channel for unlawful discharge, or advocating for Marine Protected Areas, we proudly support these endeavors and are thankful that someone is.
Right now, 1% For the Planet is looking for more companies to join this movement of community support. Giving is an essential part of a balance community, here is your chance to do your part. If you have a company, or know a company, that wants to do good and help save this planet, direc them to Join 1% For the Planet
